Tradition with a modern flair

< Back to Overview

Location

Located in Northwest Africa, Morocco, which is separated from the European continent by the Strait of Gibraltar, is an increasingly popular tourist destination. After all, who hasn’t dreamed of visiting Marrakech and Casablanca? As the westernmost of the five or six so-called Maghreb countries, it is bordered by the Mediterranean on the north and the Atlantic Ocean on the west.

Agriculture

Agriculture in Morocco is responsible for about 17% of its gross domestic product and can be considered as its most important economic sector alongside tourism. It is estimated that 44% of the working population is employed in agriculture. West and Northwest Morocco are the country’s primary areas of cultivation. Extensive irrigation cultures can be found on the coastal plains, Rharb (Sebou lowland) and Souss, as well as Marrakech and Fez.

Exports

Morocco’s 7 million tons per year make it one of the largest fruit and vegetable producers in Africa and an attractive trading partner for various fresh products. Almost 1.2 million tonnes of these are exported, including about 580,000 tonnes of citrus fruits. The tomato has dominated exports for years as far as vegetables are concerned. Today Moroccan offers a wide range of different products such as zucchini, beans, peppers and aromatic herbs.
