Location
Turkey, which is such a popular travel destination for Germans and Scandinavians, not only fascinates thanks to its unique scenic backdrop and its welcoming people, but also forms the bridge linking South-Eastern Europe with the Middle East. It is nevertheless Anatolia, the Asian part, which accounts for 97% of Turkey’s national territory.
Agriculture
About 33% of the total area of Turkey is used for agriculture. The main crops are cereals, various fruits and vegetables, including the delicious frutal fruit such as apricots, figs, pomegranates and cherries. Turkey is also the global market leader for hazelnuts as well as an important producer of cotton and tobacco.
Exports
Turkey exports mainly fresh fruit and vegetables, which account for 47% of its total agricultural exports. Tomatoes are at the top, followed by lemons, table grapes, mandarin oranges and cherries. Seen from a global perspective, Turkey covers about 25% of the quince production, 18% of the apricot crop and 6% of total grape production worldwide. Their watermelons, melons and cucumbers constitute 4% of the global offer. Looking at the global supply of vegetables, Turkey alone accounts for a whopping 7%. Turkey also comes first when it comes to the production of figs, apricots, quinces and cherries. Main export markets are Russia, Germany, Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria and Saudi Arabia.
